Obituary of George Elwood Stanton

George Elwood Stanton, age 90, of Randleman died Thursday, October 31, 2019 at Woodland Hill Care & Rehabilitation, Asheboro.

Mr. Stanton was born December 22, 1928 the son of Cammie E. and Winnie Belle Davis Stanton.

George was a native of Randleman and spent most of his life here as a farmer. He was a pioneer in the use of no-till farming and early in his farming career was awarded the Young Farmer of the Year. He was a conservation farmer for the State of North Carolina and was part of the soil conservation service. He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict and was Chairman of the Randolph County Draft Board for the Army. He was a charter member of the Level Cross Civitan Club, a Gideon for more than 30 years and a member of Cedar Square Friends Meeting. In addition to his parents, George is preceded in death by: son-in-law: Eddie Sawyer; sisters: Frances York, Emma Lee Prevo, Kathleen "Bill" Hooker and brother-in-law: Michael Childress.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years: Mary Garrett Stanton; one daughter: Teresa S. Sawyer of Randleman, NC; grandson and his wife: Brandon (Cassie) Sawyer; granddaughter and her husband: Ashley (Jacob) McCollum; granddaughter: Savannah Sawyer; great grandchildren: Sawyer McCollum, Hallie, Sophie, Stella, and Jake Sawyer and sisters-in- law: Linda Duncan and Teresa Childress

The family will receive friends Sunday, November 3, 2019 from 1:30 - 2:45 PM at Cedar Square Friends Meeting, 7546 Harlow Rd., Archdale, NC. The funeral will follow at 3:00 PM at the Meeting with Rev. Michael Fulp officiating. Burial will be in the Meeting Cemetery.
